Mechanics are expensive, and any chance to save money is the right one. It makes sense to learn a little about auto repair in order to save a little bit of cash. However, you also need to be careful not to bite off more than you can chew.

Changing your Oil
Messy, but easy. Most people can change their oil and save themselves hundreds of dollars. A car with clean oil gets better gas mileage, and the engine lasts longer, so it’s worth learning.

Replacing your Fuel Filter
Your car’s engine can be damaged by even the smallest piece of dirt if it gets past the fuel filter. Changing it yourself is an easy way to up your gas mileage, and it won’t take you that long to do.

Replacing Spark Plugs
Faulty spark plugs can often be the reason why a car won’t start, or why a battery gets drained. For the best gas mileage, replace your spark plugs ever 50000 km or so.

No matter what you do, remember that when you are fixing your own car, safety comes first. Never do any mechanical work while your engine is hot, and be sure you’re working on level ground, so your car remains sturdy after you’ve jacked it up.
