Mechanics Training

There’s a lot of money to be made as a mechanic if you’re good enough and have ambition. Mechanics will always be needed, and with today’s computer hybrid models, a technological education is more important than ever before.

If you are interested in working as a mechanic, here’s some information on how to obtain some training:

Start Young
If you’re in high school, now’s the perfect time to take advantage of automobile programs at vocational schools. During the summer or after school, take some courses on automotive repair and electrical trades. (Know that math and science are going to be important to getting into those programs, so watch your grades in those subjects!)

Apprentice and Do Your Time
The first major step in becoming a mechanic is the apprenticeship. Apply for a good training program—don’t worry, your skills will be in demand. Look for a large chain and just ask about their apprenticeship program. They’re usually paid, and while the pay isn’t great, the experience is. A lot of the early work—even when your apprenticeship is over—is going to be unglamourous. You’re going to have to be a parts-runner or an assistant, and chances are you’ll still need to take night classes in auto repair.

Automotive Training Australia (ATA)
The ATA was established in 1990 to represent all sectors of the automobile industry. If you are looking to train as a mechanic, the ATA can help you with it. The ATA ensures that the formal training meets the industry standards and also helps with the training of mechanics and technicians. The role of the ATA is to:

• Advise government on the training needs of the automotive industry nationally
• Develop nationally consistent training to meet those needs
• Market the benefits of training across the industry
• Provide advice and assistance to business enterprises
